If you are reading this introduction, you probably have a reason that brought you here. Maybe it is simple curiosity around psychotherapy and what it means, or possibly you are seeking answers around a certain issue or something on your mind that is hard to let go off or seems in your way.

 

Whatever the reason, I’d like to give you a basic understanding of what psychotherapy can do for you and those cases in which people might seek therapy. What brings people to therapy?

Often enough, it is not a specific issue that is clear and easy to articulate that brings people to therapy. It could be that we just don’t know what is happening with us, we feel ‘stuck’, or have the sense that something is missing in our life.

 

Psychotherapy can help you to find answers to why you are feeling a certain way and to better understand your emotions, worries and anxieties. The awareness you create around how you feel is a great starting point and can be developed to generate insights that can help you better understand yourself. The work you do in therapy can also help uncover and break old patterns and provide you with new perspectives. Above all, it provides a safe and confidential space to explore these issues without judgement or criticism.

Is therapy the same for everyone?

The way that psychotherapy works is different for each individual. I strongly believe that each person is on a unique journey; therefore, they need a way of working that aligns to this very personal factor. Moreover, even during your individual journey, your therapeutic needs will be continuously evolving because every day we can feel differently and, in simple terms, what we need changes accordingly.

 

That’s why I believe the connection with your therapist is so important. Your therapist acts as a guide on your journey, always offering support, direction and insight when the road gets rough. The therapeutic space gives you the opportunity to work through issues that come up throughout the session, you will be in a non-judgemental and empathetic relationship where you should feel free to express yourself.
